SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: NEW Head Coach

Coach Gordon's Image

Gordon Hudson

Head Coach

Ottawa Sooners

Gord Hudson was born and raised in Ottawa and is the proud father of 3 amazing children. Although Gord has played various sports, his passion has always been football.

From his beginnings as a member of the Bel-Air Copeland Lions in his younger days to High School football Power Laurentian, football was in his blood. When he eventually moved up to the junior ranks, he played 2 solid seasons with his hometown Ottawa Sooners where the team appeared in the National Championship 4 years straight, winning it all in 1984. Gord finished his playing career with the Ottawa Bootleggers’ Semi-Pro team, playing for a North American Championship in 1989.

For soon-to-be Coach Hudson, his football story did not end there. After obtaining his Level 2 coaching certification, he obtained a position as a Receivers and Running Back coach at Sir Robert Borden High School, under his mentor and former CFL and current CIS coach, Marcel Bellefeuille.

That stint led him to a position back with the Ottawa Sooners midget program in 1996. Coach Hudson also coached with the University of Ottawa for 6 years, winning the National Championship in 2000.

Coach Hudson was also fortunate through his relationship with Mr. Bellefeuille to work with the Montreal Alouettes at the Main Camp with the Receivers Group from 1998-1999.

With his Graduate Degree in Psychology, Hudson maintains relationships in the community, working at the Salvation Army Ottawa Booth Centre. Hudson works in the Addictions Treatments Division, working daily with men who suffer from addictions and mental health issues.

GLORY DAYS?: Hoping to again become a jr. football power, Ottawa Sooners hire Gord Hudson as coach

Hudson has a strong attachment to the rich history of the Sooners – he was part of the team that went to three straight national championships (with a 44-3 record), winning in 1984.

“I had to know Kevin was going to do it properly; if not, I  wasn’t getting on board,” said Hudson. “I want to see the Sooners get back to where they were – a powerhouse in the CJFL, where they were respected in the community. They had lost a lot of that.

Ling would also like to see a closer relationship with the team’s alumni: “You know the phrase, ‘Once a Sooner, always a Sooner.’ I’m very proud now to be part of it. I want to be able to recognize those people that brought us here.”

A New Dawn

As the new owner of the Ottawa Sooners, I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has reached out with words of support for the team and expressed their excitement and where we are headed for 2022.

As a former player, I am fully committed to returning Sooners football to Ottawa and creating a winning environment centered around player skills training and position-specific development.

Our coaches and support staff will ensure that we provide our players with the right mentorship and exposure to guide them on their future educational and football paths.

I feel we have a responsibility to our Sooner family to do whatever is necessary to put our young men in the best position to achieve championship success.

So that is why I am excited to announce that along with our return to the field for the Ottawa Sooners Junior team in the OFC, we have recently submitted our application to field a Senior Varsity Team in the Ontario Summer Football League spring 2022.

With the growing response from parents and players, we are anxiously awaiting the green light from the league. Still, we encourage you to continue to support this initiative as we move forward.

We have already begun to assemble top-level coaching staff with former Professional and CIS level experience that, once announced, will cement our standing as a force to be reckoned with.

I am excited about what is ahead and will continue to keep you updated as we move forward.

Best Regards,

Kevin Ling

Team Owner

Passing the Ball

Growing up in Ottawa, the Sooners have always had a special place in our hearts. Back then, going to a Sooners game was the place to be on a weekend. It was an event.

We have such wonderful memories of those times and feel so blessed to have had the opportunity back in 2015 to be a part of that legacy and history in our community.

We were thrilled to help to bring the spotlight of yesteryear back as well as put our own spin on the organization by adding in the younger groups of players.

Kids could be Sooners….Sooner!

It was with such pride that we watched the players share our vision and commit to the teams, unite, grow as players and young men and women.

We have had the pleasure of meeting so many amazing people along this journey, and even formed lasting friendships with many.

For that we are so grateful.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many dedicated families, players, staff, volunteers and fans for your unwavering support over the last several years.

It has been a joy to get to know all of you.

But, as the saying goes there’s a time for everything and for us the time has come to take a step back and “pass the ball” to a new ambassador for the Sooners organization.

We would like to introduce and welcome Kevin Ling and his group to the organization who will build on the Sooners tradition and add his vision to bring the Sooners into its next phase for the future.

We look forward to cheering the Sooners on and thank you all for your support.

Once a Sooner, always a Sooner,

John and Tammy Allarie

OPFL ANNOUNCES SEASON CANCELLATION

Tuesday May 19, 2020

The Ontario Provincial Football League, after reviewing the Province of Ontario Health Statements and Guidelines, those of the municipalities represented throughout the province, and the Club representatives has made the difficult decision to cancel activities related to the operation of a 2020 spring/summer football program.

The difficult decision was in keeping with one of the founding principles of the OPFL: The Player – To act on the best interests of what is best for the player. The player will be at the forefront of all league actions.

There is much uncertainty during this time.  The health crisis is affecting areas of the province with varying degrees of impact.  It is vitally important we respect and honour the health and well being of all our participants, from the player, the coach, the support staff, and the families themselves.

We applaud many of the initiatives clubs and coaches have taken over the past weeks.  We have seen and heard of the online meetings, of staff providing reaching out with on-line clinics, players getting together on-line to work out and the providing of peer-to-peer support.  The OPFL participated in a Xbox/PlayStation virtual Madden Football tournament with over 230 participants brought together throughout our Provincial clubs in early May.

All together the interest in the sport is alive thanks to all the clubs and support staff throughout Ontario doing what they do best, helping our youth to develop skills for success both on the field of play and off the field for life preparations.

The OPFL Executive will continue to explore any opportunities to keep our football community on the field. We will monitor the ongoing crisis and in the event of changes will reconvene with our memberships to explore options.

On behalf of the OPFL Executive Council we wish each of you, and your families the best during this battle.  We all look forward to the day when we can return to competition.

Sincerely,

Terry Barkley

League President

2020 OPFL Season Update

As the current public health crisis continues to evolve, we are continuing to monitor the situation very closely. The safety and well-being of all of our players is of highest priority.

On Saturday March 28, 2020, the Ontario Provincial Football League (OPFL) held an update meeting with its members.  The league has postponed all football activities until at least May 1, 2020.  The general consensus amongst members and executives was to continue waiting and have season if able.  The length and start date of the season would be entirely based on when the majority of clubs are able to safely return to the fields. In making the decision of returning to play, we will have to take into account recommendations and regulations from health authorities and government.

If the season becomes cancelled, the Ottawa Sooners will automatically provide a credit to players for use at a later date. In the event someone prefers to receive a refund and not an account credit, they will need to contact us via email (registrar@ottawasooners.ca) or phone (613.878.6373) to have it processed.

Any player wishing to immediately cancel their registration, may do so by email (registrar@ottawasooners.ca) or phone (613.878.6373).

**All account credits and refunds will be less the reduced 2020 try-out fee**

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
